Awaken Our Hearts, Heavenly Minded Lifestyle

Does Your Heart Need a Digital Detox?

January 26, 2021January 8, 2021 Laura Bailey

My hand hovered over the social media apps on my phone. The Holy Spirit had undeniably convicted me—those little square icons were distracting me from the work God had called me to do in a big way.

Gospel and Grace for Everyday
Satan’s incessant lies stole the joy of spending Satan’s incessant lies stole the joy of spending quality time with the girls. Upon acknowledging this, I immediately stepped up my prayer game and started surrounding myself around other Christian mommas—real Christian mommas—those who drive messy cars, wear yoga pants everyday and still carry ten unwanted pounds of “baby” weight. And you know what? They were happy, and they enjoyed time with their children. Sure, they also enjoyed “adult” time, but DUH, we all do, so please do not beat yourself up for that. This group of women took me in and loved me for me, and most importantly they constantly encouraged me and lifted me up as a mother because they value that role.

It has been difficult for me to accept the fact th It has been difficult for me to accept the fact that my husband neither could nor would always fulfill me and provide the type of love I needed, which for me includes a lot of praise and affirmation. Sitting over coffee with a friend discussing why so many marriages were in trouble, she made a very insightful comment: “Young girls are ingrained with the notion that ‘Prince Charming’ will one day sweep us off our feet; he will risk everything to find us and be with us, which is not true. Men, especially young men, do NOT have the capacity or capability to love like that. Period. Love like that comes as a result of many, many years of marriage. And to be quite honest, the only man who has ever filled that deep longing in me as a woman is Jesus.” There it was, the simple truth of how it really is between husband and wife.

Jesus saves—not me—the only way we can relieve Jesus saves—not me—the only way we can relieve heavy hearts is to turn burdens over to the only One capable of bearing them all (Matthew 11:28-30). Believing that our Heavenly Father is sovereign in all things, good or bad, and that He truly is "close to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18), enables us to "Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep" (Romans 12:15).

Why do we spend countless hours on our phones, tex Why do we spend countless hours on our phones, texting and scrolling through posts that if honest, we do not really care about? Why do we carry on conversations through snapchat photos or messenger, but won’t pick up the phone to chat, or actually invite that person to join us for a face to face conversation? Why? Because we’ve been tricked into believing that the world of social media is real life. And why is that? It depicts the type of life we wish was our reality, that’s why. Actually, real life is filled with mess—dirty laundry, cellulite, and bad hair, not the fake smiles we paste on for a posed photo.

Later that week, after tryouts, my ballet teacher, also a member of The Ballet Company, broke it to me like this: “You just don’t have the ballerina body. You probably should just give up dance in general.” Upon hearing that, the continental shelf of my self-esteem sank deep into an emotional abyss; she crushed me. I never told anyone, not even my mother, until years later. Those words, spoken so flippantly, shaped how I saw myself for most of my adolescence.”

“
I wish I could blame all of my past decisions on the follies of youth, but I can’t. I was in my late twenties before the Lord brought me back to Him—on His terms, not mine. I wanted the peace and joy that a relationship with our Heavenly Father provides, but without totally giving myself over to living the Christian life the way I knew it was meant to be lived. God, however, was not going to let me stray forever. He had plans for me before I was even conceived.”

Satan’s grip on my heart was tight. My total sel Satan’s grip on my heart was tight. My total self-worth was summed up in my title, my income, my boyfriend, and my weight. In this world of glitz and glam, I did my best to satisfy my soul with things that I thought would make me happy and feel good. Moreover, I was determined to never be viewed as weak or needy, which in my opinion, was true of anyone who sought professional advice or help. Between ages twenty to twenty-five, my life was in a constant state of turmoil, and I literally drove myself crazy trying to achieve the world’s view of having “arrived.”

@laurabaileywrites is on the show today exploring 10 lies Satan wants us to believe to deceive us and how to counteract them with God’s truth.

Women tend to over-think practically everything, so it can be quite scary for most of us to be left alone with our thoughts. We long for strong, intimate relationships with our Heavenly Father, daily striving to live for His glory and enjoy life in Christ. However, just when we discover the blessed assurance of standing firm in the Lord, we falter, once again, caught up in Satan’s vortex of doubt, fear, and guilt. But we can live Beyond the Noise.

We discuss:
🔘Recognizing the voice of truth versus the voice of the enemy
🔘Falsely believing we can have it all
🔘Not allowing our past defines us
🔘A healthy body image
🔘The struggle with social media
🔘God’s design for marriage
🔘The lies we believe as mothers
🔘Obeying God’s commands rather than meeting the world’s demands
🔘Feeling like our contributions are too small and insignificant
🔘Escaping the comparison trap
🔘Living each day as if it could be your last
🔘Standing firm and fighting the perpetual daily battles against Satan

We pray after tuning in you can silence the lies of the deceiver and live beyond the noise. Let’s leave the verses we are claiming over the lies in the comments below.

Why are we called to love and to sacrifice? First, because God, Himself, is love, and because of this, He has made the ultimate sacrifice (Ephesians 5:2). Secondly, He commands us to not only love Him but to love others, too (Matthew 22:37-40).

This exceeds much more than a warm embrace, a bouquet of flowers, or a card with sentimental words. Real love is mowing a neighbor’s yard, opening your home to teenagers, or caring for a sick relative throughout the night. When we strive to bring Glory to God through sincere acts of love for Him and compassion for others, the Lord gives us joy and even enthusiasm for tasks we once considered too demanding or demeaning.

This is an excerpt from “How Do We Offer Ourselves as Living Sacrifices?” By Laura Bailey. She walks us through a few practical ways to live in view of God’s mercy, putting faith into action while pursuing righteousness and godliness.

How can you be a living sacrifice today?

The Son of God was born in a stable, probably surrounded by livestock, to parents who had no distinct social standing. No wonder the Jews found it difficult to believe He was the Messiah, the One sent to save them. They had suffered much and looked for a powerful and mighty leader who would deliver them from Roman oppression.

Born in a stable, a carpenter’s son, a friend of fishermen, tax collectors and prostitutes — He seemed in no way royal. Jewish leaders rejected Him and demanded He be crucified as the ultimate imposter, “the King of the Jews.”

The Jewish people missed out on the greatest gift ever because they expected a particular king but were given another.

But, wait, isn’t that what I do every time the holidays don’t go the way I planned? Don’t I fall apart when the gift I meticulously selected is not well received? Don’t I allow a relative’s remarks to steal my Christmas cheer? Don’t I focus more on the “what” of Christmas than the Who?

Don’t miss celebrating the real meaning of Christmas because you’re blinded by the bright lights of the holidays or, like me, so wrapped up in the worldly demands of the season that you ignore the heavenly miracle of Christ’s birth.

My sincere hope is that you find joy, hope and peace this holiday season in God's redemption plan — that gift which lay in a manger in a stable in Bethlehem more than 2,000 years ago. Reread the Christmas story, and let the significance of that seemingly insignificant event penetrate your heart and fill your spirit with the joy that lasts for all eternity.

-@LauraBaileyWrites

Do you ever find yourself lost in the hype of the holidays, forgetting the true meaning of Christmas? What is one way you can make time to worship and celebrate Jesus’ birth this year?

I debated sharing as my current struggle seems tri I debated sharing as my current struggle seems trite when compared to the issues many others are facing. But, today, as I hit the big red cancel button, advising my guests that our annual Christmas party wasn't going to happen, I hung my head while tears pricked my eyes.

Sure, I would miss the tacky sweaters, eating way too much junk food, and laughing with friends, but this year the party meant so much more to me. As I sat quietly this afternoon, I realize that I was hoping this party would be the "quick-fix," the salve to heal my wounds, the distraction from the reality of life, if only for a few hours.

Yes, this year has been uniquely different, but even in years past, once the guests are gone, the food put away, and the "party is over," I begin to look for the next big thing to fill the blocks on the calendar.

Consider Solomon's words, "Meaningless! Meaningless!" says the Teacher. "Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless" ( Ecclesiastes 1:2). At first, glance one might feel these words are depressing, but on the contrary, they give us hope. Solomon is saying that anything other than a relationship with Christ will leave us feeling empty. Though we try our best to fill our lives with things of this world, we will never find contentment apart from Jesus.

There was nothing wrong with being disappointed, sad, or upset when the party was canceled. The problem was I had allowed the party to become an idol; I was looking to it to fill the hole 2020 had left in my heart, instead of turning to Jesus.

This year has been challenging, and perhaps for you and your family, there have been extra hurdles and trials. Fight the urge to place your hope in anything other than our Savior, Jesus Christ. The Lord has "set eternity on the human heart ( Ecc 3:11)"; nothing on this earth will provide lasting contentment. Let us set our hearts and minds on things above, choosing to place our hope in the unseen because we serve the One who is faithful to keep His promises.

Are you feeling the weight of disappointment this holiday season? Feel free to comment below; I would love to pray for you!👇🎄
I have really enjoyed learning about Church Histor I have really enjoyed learning about Church History this semester- especially during the Reformation. I often take for granted that I own multiple copies of the Bible, and I can freely read and study the Scriptures-- for myself. Freedom that even today many around the world do not possess.

The Reformation was based on these five fundamental doctrines. Salvation was through faith alone, grace alone, through Christ Alone. All is for the Glory of God Alone, and Scripture Alone is the authority.

Looking forward to exploring these five truths in the next few posts! Tag a friend and let's learn together!
